MACTEC Contributing to Local Economy
KNOXVILLE, Tenn, Oct. 20, 2009 – Custom railcar liners manufactured locally and
used by MACTEC on a project for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to remove
coal ash from TVA’s facility in Kingston, TN, have helped create jobs and
reduced the unemployment rate in Monroe County, Tenn.
MACTEC has retained MHF Services to supply the custom-made railcar liners for the
project. The liners, fabricated at MHF’s Sweetwater, Tenn., plant, are made of
heavy-duty black plastic. Due to the number of liners needed for the railcars,
MHF Services has hired 55 additional workers since July 22, a significant number
in this area with 18.5 percent unemployment.
“We’re very happy that this team effort between TVA, MHF Services and MACTEC has
made a significant contribution to the local economy as well as contributing to
the project’s overall success,” said Ann Massey, CEO, MACTEC.
The liners are wrapped burrito-style around the ash from the TVA Kingston ash
recovery project, inside railcars. A typical train has 110 railcars, so at least
that many liners are supplied daily to MACTEC.
“MHF Services workers at its local Sweetwater facility are manufacturing 770
liners a week needed for the project,” said Bob Shawver, President, MHF
Services. “We expanded our work force and ramped up to running shifts around the
clock to keep up with the demand of this very important project.”
